Jake Washburn, a young detective, is a bit naive and mildly autistic. He misses social cues frequently. While his quirks are sometimes a drawback in relationships with the other detectives and his love life, Jake more than makes up for it with sharp observational skills.
While investigating a simple porch pirate case, Jake stumbles on a vigilante group that punishes perpetrators when the justice system fails victims of sex crimes. Jake and others on his team go after the vigilantes, but they also become champions of better police training and reform. Jake's awakening about human depravity bursts his bubble, but he uses the experience to grow and help others do the same. Along the way, he learns about the paradox of love, both how it can fulfill us or destroy us.
As direct providers of care, Frank and Andrea Ramsey just wanted to do their jobs, helping people get sober and sane. Then the corporations moved in, gutting the addictions treatment and mental health industries. As they became more prominent in their fields, the couple found their voices and tried to protect their patients. After Frank switched careers to higher education and the corporate juggernauts came after colleges too, Frank and Andie had enough. Fighting back placed the couple in peril but underestimating the Ramseys was the ‘big guys’ biggest mistake.
To a great extent older men (especially white ones) still rule America, but a sea change is underway. In politics, business, and in life these men are faced with diminishing influence. How they react to these changes will determine the progress of society and the quality of their own lives. With the serious problems America faces, we can no longer float on the choppy waves of patriarchy and privilege. Generations of Americans also need to get past blaming each other and must work together, regardless of our differences.
