The BissCom Read-Aloud Series was written by Tom Bissonette, MSW, a former College Counselor and Family Counselor who also taught human development courses for 20 years. The children’s books cover topics related to positive development.
Tom also writes novels for adults that, while entertaining, also remind adults of the serious social, mental, and civic issues many people face in society.
The Kids Books:
Add It All Up is a story about a well-rounded boy who aspires for greatness and learns that greatness isn’t necessarily about being the best at something. His self-esteem improves as he realizes that he has several things that he’s good at. This book is ideal for kids ages 7-10 and can be used with adults too.
Bodie Bear Wants to Know features a curious child (bear cub) who frequently asks "why". His parents learn how to encourage his curiosity but also teach him to postpone gratification by their direct but patient reactions. Kids ages 3 - 5 will enjoy and learn from this one.
Good Ideas/Bad Ideas addresses decision-making and context sensitivity and uses humor to make the point that what good in one situation won’t work in another. Kids Pre-K through age 5 will laugh and learn hearing this one.
I'm Enough highlights the challenges of an only child, or a child who is socially isolated. She can’t control her circumstances, so she has to find strength within herself. Children 7 - 12 will benefit from this account of a lonely girl.
Legos, Grandpa, and Me underscores the benefits of cooperation and listening to each other. It describes the special relationship of a grandson and grandfather. Even though they are separated by two generations, they show mutual respect. Ages 4 - 12, or anyone who has ever played with Legos, will identify with the characters' experiences.
My Special Sticky Brain is a story about a neuro-divergent child (high-functioning autism) and how he tries to make contact with others despite his tendency to fixate on his interests. Older kids 10 + or families who have this type of child will learn they are not alone.
Love Critters is an array of messages in rhyme about civility and setting boundaries. It demonstrates how kindness brings about more kindness. Kids ages 4 - 9 will see themselves in this story even though the characters are cute, cuddly animals.
So Many Things is about a girl who exhibits ADHD traits and how she copes and manages the expectations of others. Since girls are sometimes overlooked when they show these behaviors or traits, it offers insight for kids aged 7 - 12 and adults about anyone with ADHD.
Sysmo, the Sad Snail offers hope for those with physical limitations and reminds us that everyone has something to contribute, each in their own way. Ages 4-9 will learn to empathize with those who struggle with their day-to-day challenges.
Tuffysaurus Learns a Lesson looks at the dynamics of bullying and teaches the social cost of aggressive behavior. In this case exclusion by peers facilitated a change of heart in the “bully”. Kids aged 5 - 9 will see the consequences of bullying and the opportunity for redemption.
Wise Walters Wonder Words explores the way we think about and use words, which can either create connection or separation. Ages 7-12 and even older can use this story for a robust discussion about why words matter.
I Didn't Expect a Zebra Today helps youth of any age and adults think about how we greet those who are different from us. In the end, the characters reflect on how fear of the "other" can cloud our judgement.
